THE MIND

mind
Our mind is made up of the subconscious and conscious. The subconscious is in control of all involuntary functions of our body i.e. heartbeat and breathing and the conscious is in control of all voluntary functions like logic. Einstein said that our subconscious runs us 90% of the time, like the part of an iceberg under the water and the conscious 10%, like the tip of the iceberg. Our mind is like a computer, the subconscious processes 40 million bits of information per second and the conscious 40 bits of information per second. Our mind holds a mixture of negative and positive thoughts, beliefs, feelings and emotions.

Attitude, Emotions and Beliefs

In psychology, an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs and behaviours toward a particular issue, person or event, held in both the conscious and subconscious mind. Attitudes are often the result of experience/s and our upbringing that are powerful influences over our behaviour/s and how we do things. While attitudes are enduring, they can also be limiting, but they can also change. What’s holding you back in reaching your full potential?

Mindset

ThetaHealing® is a powerful meditative technique that facilitates the rewiring of your mind and mindset by assessing the theta brainwave, the hypnotic state where your brain is capable of intense and profound learning, growth, and healing. This process helps to identify then release and clear limiting beliefs, emotions and attitudes and/or issues that are holding you back or keeping you stuck in your life and stopping you from being the best version of yourself, whatever that is for you: being happy, feeling good about yourself, being successful, performing better, healthier, allowing you to become a better you and leading a fuller life. Your mindset shifts where you are and allows you to be open to mindfulness, positivity and to having more control of your life. Science tells us we can rewire/reprogram our mind via neuroplasticity - the ability of neural networks in the brain to change. This capability is in you, in all of us, be open to it and your life will change and transform, for the better.

Breathing

We just do it. Most people assume their breathing must be ok because they are alive. That’s a myth. Your breathing may be an issue, especially if you are breathing through your mouth and chest muscles and not through your nose using your diaphragm.

Mouth breathing

(incorrect way of breathing): Mouth breathing is the catalyst for the diaphragm to be become lazy in the process of and for breathing.
  1. Uses more energy leading to tiredness and your coping mechanisms will wear down
  2. Your nose becomes blocked, making it even harder to nose breathe
  3. Feels like you are always stressed and short of breath
  4. You are fatigued or tired must of the time
  5. Can cause overbite and incorrect jaw formation in children
  6. Increases heart rate
Science tells us correct breathing is vital for the normal functioning of the body and it’s the one involuntary function of the body we can control. On average a person takes in roughly 22,000 breaths per day

Nose Breathing (correct way of breathing):

Nose breathing is the correct way to bring air into our lungs.
  1. Acts as a filtration system for air coming into the lungs, warms, humidifies, cleans and sterilizes the air going into the lungs
  2. Helps strengthen the immune system and immunity
  3. Helps reduce blood pressure and heart rate
  4. Helps you to release-reduce stress and relax your nervous system, vital is stress management
  5. Helps the quality of sleep
  6. Stimulates the vagus nerve that it’s time to relax
  7. Correct oxygenation takes place with a min 20% more oxygen intake than mouth breathing
  8. Helps with cognitive function, focus, being in the present moment (mindfulness)

The Buteyko Breathing Method (BBM)

The Buteyko Breathing Method is breathing retraining or reprogramming with simple and effective exercises. This technique teaches you how to do this, quickly and easily, normalizing your breathing for your body’s needs. You learn what normal breathing is again and how to do it. Dysfunctional breathing or mouth breathing (over-breathing) has a negative impact on your health over a period. Asthma and respiratory issues The BBM aims to reverse this vicious cycle and re-train the brain on how to breathe normally, well and correctly. Within a few sessions breathing patterns and rhythm can normalise with clients feeling better within themselves enabling them to enjoy life more.

Sports or Fitness Performance:

More and more we are recognizing that mindset and breathing is being used to help sportspeople and active people gain the edge in their performances. Through mind and breathing reprogramming, Olympians and everyday people have been able effectively improve their performance and results. Correct nose & diaphragm breathing:
  • decreases the impact of lactic acid in muscular activity
  • promotes maximum delivery of oxygen to the working parts of the body
  • cuts down dehydration, perspiration and recovery time.
  • helps maintain focus when under mental pressure or physical stress
  • improves recovery time and reduces muscle soreness
  • can increase oxygen intake by a min of 20%, expands the blood vessels
  • activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System, helping in stress, anxiety and pain reduction
  • helps increase focus

A growth mindset allows you to open your mind to change your breathing, emotions and beliefs that hold you in the patterns that keep you stuck in old habits which minimizes your growth and performance.

The Nervous System: The breath is the core feedback loop of the nervous system Pain, Stress and Anxiety

We are chronic shallow breathers, mouth, upper chest and shoulders, this stimulates the flight or fight response – stress. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for intense physical activity and is often referred to as the fear – fight – flight - freeze response. The parasympathetic nervous system has almost the exact opposite effect and relaxes the body and inhibits or slows many high energy functions inducing relaxation. Pain, stress, and anxiety cause hyper-arousal of the sympathetic nervous system. Normal nose diaphragmatic breathing helps stimulate and activate the parasympathetic nervous system helping in stress, anxiety, and pain reduction, as well as reducing heart rate and blood pressure thus allowing the body to return to a more relaxed state - the relaxation response. Life has become more hectic and stressful, the feelings and symptoms of burnout, fatigue, worry, overwhelm uncertainly, pressure and imbalance in one’s life contributes to the body being in a constant state of stress and physical discomfort. This heightened state of stress will cause the body to breakdown, emotionally, mentally, and physically over time.
